New Years Fandom Resolutions -5 Fandom Friday

 In General Geekiness
Excitingly enough, this week’s 5 Fandom Friday is directly nerdy enough to warrant a full blog post (as opposed to a condensed list through a Tweet). With 2014 out the window in the blink of an eye, my geek to-do list is definitely long. Here are the top 5 nerd-tastic things I would like to accomplish this year.

1. Attend more conventions

Last year I attend my first con; Berserkon, a local convention in Duluth. Having grown up in Alaska, the con scene wasn’t too prolific (don’t get me started on the costs of leaving the state to visit the lower 48 for a convention). Last year I was immediately hooked on the con atmosphere at Berserkon even despite the fact that the con was only in its second (and thus quite small yet). This year I hope to attend more cons in addition to Berserkon.

2. Improve my cosplay skills
I guess 2014 was a year of firsts because I crafted my first cosplay last year too; Elspeth, Sun’s Champion from Magic the Gathering. I even took first place at the cosplay contest at Berserkon with her. This year I hope to complete 2 additional costumes. One of them will be “Project Cortana;” dubbed that as a secret code name by my boyfriend and I until the outfits are complete. We have T-minus 5 months until con deadline to start and complete them! They will require new materials and processes for me and I look forward to expanding my cosplay knowledge arsenal.

3. Visit Middle Earth (aka New Zealand)
Visiting the filming locations of the Lord of the Rings has been on my bucket list for many years now! Will this be the year I finally get to visit Rivendell and Hobbiton? Who knows if it’ll work out, but this guy will remain actively on my list and I will continue to save up for the trip!

4. Design a board game
I have enjoyed board gaming my entire life. I’ve since graduated from games like Monopoly and Life (Clue is still a classic favorite though) to German-style games like Settlers of Catan, Stone Age, and Pandemic. When I was in middle school I actually designed a couple kids board games and even fully built/created one of them; ‘School’s Out.’ I would like to create a board game for adults now. Bonus if I could get it funded!

5. Sew a nerd quilt
Last year I finished my first quilt (look, another first). This year I would like to create my own pattern (something nerdy of course) and sew another one. Not sure If I want to make a wall, lap, or queen bed sized quilt, but I’ve got a few subject ideas in mind; namely Lord of the Rings or Legend of Zelda at this point. As a bonus, this project will help me improve my novice sewing skills which will in turn, help my cosplaying.

A nerd quilt sounds so AMAZING! Whatever size you decide to make I hope you’ll share with us your progress.

Yes, I’m quite excited for the project, especially since I have a new sewing machine to play with now. I will definitely be sharing my project as I go!

Emerald City Comic-Con might be one worth checking out! I think it’s in Washington State!

Thanks for the suggestion B! I actually live in northern Minnesota now, so there are many larger conventions that are a lot closer now (as compared to when I lived in Alaska). The hardest part is going to be choosing which one(s) to attend.
