I am Aquawoman…What Superhero are You?

 In General Geekiness

This week marks the 2 year anniversary of finding out that I am Aquawoman (and of my surgery too)…What exactly does that mean?! Keep reading to find out and discover which superhero you are.

Two years ago I was coming off a cold when I noticed a lump on the side of my neck. Of course my initial thought was that I had a swollen glandand that my cold had become more than a cold. Something didn’t seem quite right for a swollen gland though and I decided to see a doctor. After some tests, including an MRI, I was told it was a branchial cleft cyst. EMedicine.Medscape.com describes the condition as:

“Branchial cleft cysts are congenital epithelial cysts, which arise on the lateral part of the neck from a failure of obliteration of the second branchial cleft in embryonic development.
Phylogenetically, the branchial apparatus is related to gill slits. In fish and amphibians, these structures are responsible for the development of the gills, hence the name branchial (branchia is Greek for gills).”

In simple terms, this means that the open flaps of skin along my neck did no close up properly while in the womb…in other words, I still have “gills”…aka I’m Aquawoman! At the time, I was faced with a trip to China with less than 3 weeks time till takeoff. I opted to have surgery to remove the cyst; less it get infected or swell worse during my travels abroad. It was an outpatient surgery that left me pretty immobile for 3 days and with limited mobility for about 1-2 weeks…you don’t realize how heavy your head is until you lose the ability to adjust and move your neck! Since that time, I’m going on 2 years strong with barely a scar on my neck. Despite no issues since, it is possible for another cyst to form in my lifetime; but let’s hope not!

I’m not sure we ever actually got a photo of me prior to surgery, but this image is pretty darn close to what I looked like. The positioning and rough size (I think mine was a little smaller since we acted so quickly) are just about on par with the cyst I had.

While I enjoy making up stories about my scar, and telling people that I’m Aquawoman, I’d have to say there are many other cooler options out there for superheroes; Superman, Spiderman, and Wolverine all come to mind right off the bat based on their powers and qualities. I decided to settle the matter by taking a quiz…because of course those things are 100% accurate and not easy to steer at all 😉 I ended up with Superman…and you know what? I can live with that outcome.
