5 Friendship Destroying Games

 In General Geekiness
“Come over and play games!” they said. “It’ll be fun…”
You know those moments – that point in a game where at least one player ends up beyond frustrated and another player ends up feeling super smug? I know you’ve all been there, on at least one side of the exchange, if not both at some point. Here are 5 friendship destroying games for your amusement, cause if you’ve been in the situation, then I know you’ll laugh thinking back on the experience now.

1. Mario Kart

The dreaded blue shell. There’s no better way to take down the 1st place racer than with a blue shell. There’s no worse feeling than being in 1st place and hearing that blue shell coming up on your tail.
Also, the cheap shortcuts on Wario Stadium and Rainbow Road (which aren’t cheap if you know how to make them of course!) plus lighting before a big jump…which happens to be the worst on Wario Stadium too >.<

2. Mario Party

Mario Party has always been a group-playing favorite Nintendo 64 game of mine. There are 3 top occurrences in this game than can lead to quite the commotion though.
1. Magic Lamp -kiss your star goodbye to that no-good thief unless you have a repellent for the equally no-good Boo.
2. Chance Time – This seemingly innocuous “game” invariably ends up screwing someone over. Get ready for the salt to fly.
3. Bob-omb’s battle games, particularly the luck-based ones – Really Merry-Go-Chomp? No! There’s nothing merry about you picking my color 1st and me losing 50 of my unwillingly taken coins.
Boy, what’s with all the Mario games having all these ‘backstabbing’ options?!

3. Settlers of Catan

Another innocent game of collecting resources and building roads and cities…not!
1. I play the thief on your number 6 grain hex and cut you off from the resource….muhahahaha! I can assure you the 6 will definitely roll the next 10 turns in a row BECAUSE you can’t collect on it now, plus you won’t be able to roll a 7 now to save your life, nor can you afford to purchase a development card. Sucks to be you.
2. Bam! I build my settlement to cut off your longest road, or better yet!….I build my roads to block you in. (This is for sure the worst in 4 player games when the board gets crowded.)
3. M-O-N-O-P-O-L-Y Card -give me all your wood underlings!
Honestly though, there’s needs to be a longest turn card. -2 victory points to the player who’s taken the longest turn.

4. Magic the Gathering

Let me tell you, I’ve probably never seen  more salt than I have around a table of Magic players, especially some table-top EDH on a Friday night when drinks may be involved. There’s nothing more frustrating than being mana screwed, mana flooded, or having your opponent always top deck the perfect answer to win or get out of a jam.
One thing that REALLY ticks me off is land destruction, particularly in EDH. The whole point is to play Magic, but how can you play Magic when it’s turn 12 and someone just wiped the board of all lands -.-  …definitely the fast track to becoming my enemy #1.
Also, chaos decks….but if I’m being honest I own one of these guys. DON’T play land destruction or we really won’t be playing Magic for the rest of the night.

5. Munchkin

Isn’t just the title of this game alone enough of an explanation? This game is an ultimate friendship destroyer. In fact, if you still have friends at the end of this game then your doing it wrong 😉
Oh look, I think my level 20, crush all human souls, ‘wandering monster’ wants to join your current battle. And oh look! I have a couple curses to throw your way too -lose your head gear please. And then, once your dead and gone, I’ll be sure to loot your dead body for good measure. Thanks for the sweet new pair foot gear!
…Some people just want to watch the world burn.

Bonus -Making all the fandoms mad at once

No, these memes aren’t games, but they’re a good way to get the blood of geeks boiling. Well done internet trolls, you know just the buttons to push when it comes to people’s passions/obsessions. There are many of these out there, but they make me chuckle so I decided to include a few on this post to make everyone squirm. Go on -squirm about all the inaccuracies and fight the urge to comment with everything that’s wrong.

Of course honorable mentions for friendship destroying games can be doled out to Diplomacy, Goldeneye 007, Monopoly, the Draw 4 card in Uno, ‘campers’ and screen-cheaters in Halo (and other similar games like CoD), plus Risk.SO! Which of these friendship-destroying games have you had the lovely opportunity to enjoy? Which ones would you add to the list? Share them in the comment below!

Haha…I think that the only one of these I actually played with friends would have to be Monopoly. I’ve played Mario Kart, but never had more than 1 controller – so playing with friends was definitely out. :/ Most of my friends were more interested in outdoor activities…or those that involved one on one play.

Maybe it’s best you only ever had 1 controller 😉

For me Settlers of Catan easily tops that list. Also monopoly.

Yes to all of these and more! I do not play Munchkin! I just watch the world burn, hahaha!
Most recently, I got really annoyed at a game of “Geek Out.” The premise is fun, but some people just commune with the pop culture more (and remember more) than the rest of us. And people can really get down to the nitty and gritty details when it comes to discounting other people’s contributions that we had to get very specific when reading off the categories.

I have not heard of Geek Out -is it a sort of Trivial Pursuit type game play?
