Star Wars Comic Book Shoes Craft Project

 In DIY Projects

We actually had summer-like weather all weekend long here in Northern Minnesota. That got me in a sunshine mood and feeling like I needed a fun new geeky accessory for the upcoming summer season. Enter -homemade Star Wars comic book ballet flats. You can’t beat geek chic!

This project is pretty straight forward. You’ll need:

  • A comic book (you don’t mind parting with)
  • Modge Podge
  • Paint brush
  • Pair of shoes -the smoother the surface texture, the easier things should stick with the Modge Podge.

Directions

Step 1: Cut or tear up pieces of your comic book. Make sure you tear pieces into difference sizes and lengths/widths to accommodate the different sections and shapes of your shoe.

I started with pieces that had been cut to create a base layer on the shoe. The straight edges made them easier to line the top and bottom edges of the shoe with. After the base layer was done, I went back with torn images (that I wanted to feature) to create a better collage-like effect. I feel like the torn edges make a better final appearance -but personal preference.

Step 2. Apply a healthy coat of Modge Podge to a section of your shoe and apply a piece of the torn comic book. Cover the piece of paper in another layer of Modge Podge and work it till it sticks.

Don’t be afraid of getting messy here. I found that using my fingers to coax the pieces over some of the curves helped them to stay in place. I also made a point of working around the shoe and overlapping paper pieces as I went to help secure them in place.

Β Step 3: Once your shoe is dry and you’re satisfied with the overall look, apply 1-2 more coats of Modge Podge (let dry in between) to ensure everything is secure and decently waterproof.
If you had a tough time getting a nice edge around the top of the shoe, don’t be afraid to create a thin border using a dark-colored sharpie marker.

I’m ready to enjoy the warm weather this summer with my new Star Wars shoes!

You should definitely give it a try Ashlee! Your tastes sound similar to mine, but sometimes things can pleasantly surprise us πŸ˜‰

OMG! These are So Awesome!!! I’m really jealous at them.

Unfortunately, I usually tend to “step out” of shoes like these when I walk in them. Otherwise I would totally start scouting for some and make them myself!

      Thank you Ravanel!
Secret…see the loop at the back of the shoe? There’s actually an adjustable ankle strap that slides through them -no “stepping out”, cause I absolutely have that issue with flats too!

These look amazing! I really want to decorate a pair of shoes myself – by drawing a design on them, but I was wondering how i’d make them waterproof. Is Modge Podge a waterproof glue then? I’ve never heard of it before, but it sounds like something I need to invest in.

Excellent question Emma. Let me provide a little more detail. Modge Podge is brand that offers many different varieties/formulas of glues/sealants. The one in my photo isn’t really waterproof.
They do make an outdoor one that is highly waterproof.
Another option for the final coat or 2 is a clear acrylic sealant. Modge Podge makes this too > http://amzn.to/1sCIgwQ

These are amazing! I’ve been wanting to try this for ages but I’m afraid they wouldn’t last long especially with wet English weather!!

Not all clothing and accessories are made for everyday wear, 365 days a year, right? As long as you seal these guys properly (see my above comment) I don’t think you’d have an issue…as long as your not purposefully wading through puddles πŸ˜‰

I think you’ve found your solution then! πŸ˜‰ I know you have lots of comic books -sure there’s one or 2 you wouldn’t mind donating to the project. Share some photos when you finish.
