Firefly Fruity Oaty Bars

 In Recipes

Fruity Oaty Bars are a manufactured foodstuff from the movie Serenity. We see an advertisement for the colorful bar in the Maidenhead and it’s just one of the many subliminal Alliance signals intended for River Tam.

Due to the scarcity of fresh produce, I highly doubt the granola bars are made with actual fruit, but my homemade recipe below gives you a couple options if you’d like to include some fruit flavors in your bars.

Granola Bar

  • 4.5 cups rolled oats
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup butter, melted
  • 3/4 cup honey
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • Wilton gel food coloring

Optional Fruit Options

  • 1 cup chopped, dried fruit(s)
  • 1 cup of your favorite seedless jelly, warmed slightly

1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Grease a 9×13 baking pan. (You’ll see in my photos that I halved the recipe and used a 9×9 instead)

2. Combine all of your dry ingredients into 1 bowl; the brown sugar, flour, oats, salt, and baking soda.

3. Combine all of your wet ingredients into a separate bowl; the melted butter, egg, honey, and vanilla extract.

4. Thoroughly combine your dry and wet ingredients together. I would recommend using your hands to work everything together well. If you plan on adding chopped, dried fruit, incorporate it now.

5. Separate your granola dough into 5 balls. Add food coloring to each ball of dough and and thoroughly mix in with a gloved hand.

6. Once the color is mixed in, roll the dough into a snake shape, then press into the pan as a strip. Repeat this for all colors, firmly packing into the pan and firmly smooshing the colors into one another.

7. If you’re adding a jelly layer, now is when you’ll add it. Remember, you’ll want a layer of granola in the pan, then a thin layer of jelly, topped by a final layer of granola (I’d recommend making a double batch of granola bars, or making the regular batch and using a 9×9 pan). When spreading your jelly, leave a 1/4 inch border around the edge of the pan so you can seal the granola to prevent the jelly from seeping to the edge and burning against the pan during baking.

8. Bake at 325 degrees F for 18 minutes, until the edges just start to become golden grown. Do not over bake as they will dry out and get very crumbly!

9. Let the pan rest for 5 minutes, then cut the bars while they are still hot. Allow them to completely cool before removing from the pan.
